We hope you enjoy owning this icon masterpiece, the Seagull 1963! We hope you are already in love with this unique piece and want to make it stand the test of time. In this case it is important to know how to take care of your beloved watch :-).
Mechanical watches are designed to last, many hand-it-down watches from earlier generations are primarily mechanical watches. Let’s face it, you’re not going to buy a watch like a Seagull 1963 every week, so if you want something for life you’ve got to take care of it.
Many original 1963 Seagull watches from the ’60s are still in circulation for two main reasons: their well-made quality and the care the owner provided it with.
There are a few things to keep in mind when you own your 1963 Seagull. Don’t push your luck and test your watch to it’s limits:
When you wear your watch every day, you should always keep water resistance in mind. Although the watch case has rubber gaskets and seals everywhere to keep dust out, it is still important to take into account the tested and approved water resistance of 3 bars. This means: no swimming, no showering and no getting wet!
It is indeed rated for 3 atm, but this is mainly a rating against spat water and rain.
Keep your watch wound up:
Even though the oil in your watch lasts a long time, they can dry out over time! The action of winding makes the clock run and distribute the oil inside the Seagull 1963 watch. A well-enforced watch will run smoothly for a long time. You don’t have to do this every day for every hour; we recommend that you do this once a month.
Don’t wear your watch on your wrist when winding:
When winding your watch, always keep in mind not to wind it on your wrist! We never recommend winding your watch while it is on your wrist as this creates stress on the mechanism which can warp or damage it over time.
Keep your watch clean, but don’t use soap!
We never like to see a dirty watch for the obvious reasons. We don’t like to see dirty Seagull 1963 watches as this undermines their beauty and besides, this dirt could enter through the rubber seals and cause damage on the inside. We never recommend using too much water with regular soap because soap particles can find their way into small holes in the rubber seal and cage. It doesn’t help the watchat all. Special cleaning products for watches are on the market, use them if you can!
Very important maintenance:
Since watches, especially hand wound watches, are full of continuously moving parts, they require precision. We recommend having your watchmaker change the oil every five years.
Enjoy your watch:
If you consider all the problems that a mechanical watch can have, few people will want to own or use it. This is a big mistake. We really want to tell you: Wear your watch and enjoy it as it should be! A beautiful watch should not be locked away in a safe, it is made to be worn. Wearing it regularly helps to spread the oil around, so there is enough to keep it on your wrist as much as possible!
On behalf of the Seagull1963 team, we would like to thank you for being proud to own the watch. It’s good to know that our favorite watches are very handy!
